Description

Refugio Huascarán offers impressive views of Huascarán Norte and Sur and Huandoy, especially at sunset. From the refuge, you can continue to Campo 1 (5,300 m a.s.l.) or continue the ascent towards Huascarán.

There are two main options for reaching the refuge: from Musho or from Bosque de Yauyo (via Armapampa). We recommend the latter, as the route is shorter and has less elevation gain; take a shared minibus to Carhuaz, then a taxi to the trailhead. For the return, you can also choose either trail, although we recommend Musho (3h30 | -1613m | 9.8km), because the slope is gentler and finding a taxi there is easier.

Although access to the refuge is easier than climbing Huascarán, it remains a demanding hike because of its elevation gain and altitude. Being well acclimatised and physically fit is important, especially when carrying a backpack.

If the refuge is open, you can stay there; we recommend booking in advance. Camping is also possible. The refuge offers a menu, so you can buy food directly there, such as pasta.
