Description

Chavín is a world-renowned pre-Columbian site. It was the great ceremonial and pilgrimage centre of the Chavín culture (1500–300 BC), whose influence extended from the coast to the edge of the rainforest. Because of its immense historical and cultural value, UNESCO declared the complex a World Heritage Site.

The site stands out for its advanced stone architecture. The complex combines terraces, plazas and temples connected by more than two kilometres of underground galleries, together with a sophisticated hydraulic system demonstrating its builders' technical knowledge.

This architecture is closely linked to Chavín's spiritual world. The complex preserves numerous sculptures and works of stone art, including the Lanzón Monolítico, Estela Raimondi, Obelisco Tello and Cabezas Clava. These depict human figures combined with animals considered sacred, such as jaguars, snakes and birds of prey, reflecting a worldview in which humans, animals and nature were deeply connected.

Visiting Chavín offers an insight into its beliefs and one of the most important civilisations of América Latina and the Andes.
