Description
Lagunas de Llanganuco are among Parque Nacional Huascarán's most iconic landscapes and one of the Cordillera Blanca's most popular visits. Set within a glacial valley surrounded by great snow-capped peaks, they stand out for their intensely turquoise waters, queñual forests and impressive views of the surrounding mountains.
The main lakes are Chinancocha (“female lake”) and Orconcocha (“male lake”), set among some of the Cordillera Blanca's best-known peaks, such as Huascarán, Huandoy, Pisco, Chacraraju, Yanapaccha and Chopicalqui. Although you can arrive directly by car, you can walk along the shore to enjoy the scenery more slowly (+2 km | +50 m | 40 min). The area also offers picnic spots and boat rides.
If you wish to continue exploring, you can drive to Portada de Llanganuco for panoramic views of both lakes from higher up, creating one of the finest perspectives in this part of the park.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Llanganuco is ecologically important for its glacial water sources and high-Andean queñual forests, unique and highly vulnerable ecosystems of the tropical Andes.
